Chapter 25 - I become less available

Ironically, Odelia became more independent after the case.
Not because Morwenna forced her.
Because safety gave her room.
At nine, she joined a school science club that met until five-thirty.
She loved it.
That meant I picked her up later.
She did not panic.
One evening I was stuck in traffic.
Nora called:
“Odelia wants to know your ETA.”
I said:
“Twenty minutes.”
Nora handed her the phone.
“Daddy?”
“Hey.”
“You’re late.”
“I know.”
“Twenty?”
“About.”
“Okay.”
No tears.
No fear.
No grandmother saying:
See? He chooses work.
Just a child receiving information.
At nine, she went to a two-night school nature program.
Caroline flew up because both of us were ridiculous.
Odelia said:
“You know parents don’t stay.”
“Yes.”
“Then why is Mom here?”
Caroline answered:
“Because I wanted dinner with your father.”
Odelia looked horrified.
“Gross.”
We laughed.
She went.
No midnight pickup.
No crisis.
When she returned:
“Food was bad.”
That was the headline.

Resilience arrived through normal life.
Not humiliation.
