Chapter 13 - The family meeting I refused

Linda’s sister Carol called.
“We need to sit down.”
“No.”
“Megan.”
“No.”
“This family cannot spend six months talking through attorneys.”
“That sounds fine to me.”
“She’s sorry.”
“She has my number.”
“She can’t contact you because her lawyer told her not to.”
“Then she can follow her lawyer’s advice.”
Carol sighed.
“Ben is falling apart.”
I looked toward the living room.
Ben was reading Ellie a book.
“That is not my job right now.”
Carol lowered her voice.
“You slapped Linda too.”
“Yes.”
“So everybody lost control.”
There it was.
The equalizer.
I said:
“I am handling my slap separately.”
“Exactly. So why not admit this was a terrible family fight?”
“Because Ellie was not fighting.”
Silence.
“She was two.”
Carol tried:
“No one meant—”

I hung up.
Not every sentence deserves an ending.
