Chapter 23 - The divorce

We divorced.

Not immediately.

We spent eighteen months separated.

Therapy.

Co-parenting.

Individual counseling.

Ben changed.

I changed.

The marriage still did not come back.

People asked:

“If he changed, why leave?”

Because change does not create a debt of reconciliation.

I loved Ben.

Some part of me probably always would.

But every time he said:

“I didn’t want to tell you because I knew how you’d react,”

I heard the architecture of our marriage.

He had treated my reactions as hazards to manage.

Information passed through him first.

His mother’s behavior.

Family complaints.

Warnings.

He decided what I was allowed to know based on whether my response would make his life harder.

He stopped doing that.

Too late for me to rebuild intimacy.

Our divorce was ordinary.

House.

Retirement.

Savings.

Cars.

No giant businesses.

No hidden millions.

We sold the marital house because neither wanted to stay.

Split equity under settlement.

Shared parenting.

No spousal support.

Ben moved into a townhouse fifteen minutes from me.

I bought a smaller house near Ellie’s preschool.

We used a parenting app for scheduling at first.

Then ordinary texts.

The divorce hurt.

Still right.
