Chapter 4 - Ben had heard the truth before the hospital

I walked into the hallway.

Ben stood beside a vending machine.

He saw my face.

“What?”

I held the phone.

“Did you tell your mother she threw it?”

His expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

“The recording.”

He looked toward Officer Morgan.

Then back at me.

“Oh.”

That was all.

Oh.

“You knew.”

“Megan.”

“You said at the hospital that maybe Ellie bumped her.”

“I was trying to slow everything down.”

“You heard your mother say she didn’t mean to hit her face.”

“I didn’t process it.”

“You said, ‘You threw it.’”

His face went pale.

“You played all of it?”

“Yes.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Ellie’s room.

Lowered his voice.

“Can we not do this in the hallway?”

I laughed.

“Where should we do it, Ben? Inside the family?”

He flinched.

That phrase had not been said yet.

Not exactly.

But the concept had lived in our marriage for years.

He whispered:

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Mom getting arrested.”

I stared at him.

“Our daughter was being treated for burns.”

“I know.”

“Which one scared you more?”

“That’s not fair.”

It was.

He knew it too.

His mother had changed her story within minutes.

He had heard.

He had challenged her.

Then at the hospital he allowed me to stand alone inside the version where Linda might simply have spilled coffee.

Why?

Because uncertainty bought him time.

Time before he had to choose.

I said:

“Do not go into Ellie’s room right now.”

“I’m her father.”

“Yes.”

His eyes hardened.

“You can’t keep me from her.”

“I’m asking you for ten minutes because I am furious.”

That was better.

Not pretending I had authority I did not.

He looked away.

“Fine.”

He walked down the corridor.

Ten minutes became forty.

He did not return until my father arrived.
