Chapter 24 - Ben as a father
Ben did not lose custody because his mother committed a crime.
He had not injured Ellie.
He had not authorized the coffee.
Family court cared about his judgment.
So did I.
Our parenting plan included clear restrictions regarding Linda while criminal orders and safety concerns remained.
Ben complied.
No secret visits.

She’s still Grandma.
No photographs sent without discussion.
No surprise FaceTime.
That mattered.
At one point Linda asked him:
“You’re really going to keep my granddaughter from me because Megan says so?”
Ben answered:
“No. Because you burned her.”
He told me later.
I asked:
“Did you enjoy saying that?”
“No.”
Good.
He finally understood boundaries were not weapons.
They were descriptions of consequence.
By year three, Ben was a good co-parent.
Not perfect.
He forgot preschool spirit day.
Bought the wrong yogurt.
Let Ellie stay up too late watching a movie.
