Chapter 13 - Claire’s own mistake

I posted nothing.

That was good.

Then I made another mistake.

I told three close friends:

“Veronica stole twenty thousand dollars from her sister.”

At that moment, the $21,730 number was an accountant’s strong-documentation category.

Not a criminal judgment.

One friend repeated it.

Within forty-eight hours, a cousin posted:

Funny how some people scream about family while robbing old women.

No name.

Everyone knew.

Veronica’s lawyer sent cease-and-desist letters.

Could she sue?

Potential defamation.

Truth/privilege issues complicated.

But my wording had been too categorical.

Our attorney said:

“Stop summarizing disputed accounting as conviction.”

I hated being corrected when I was emotionally right.

Then realized:

Emotionally right is not a legal category.

I called my friends.

“Please stop repeating the amount. The accounting is ongoing.”

One asked:

“So she didn’t steal?”

“I’m saying the court hasn’t decided.”

Then I apologized to Elaine.

“I talked about your finances.”

She said:

“You were angry.”

“That doesn’t make it okay.”

“No.”

Good.

Then Daniel.

He was more upset than Elaine.

“You promised we wouldn’t turn this into family gossip.”

“I know.”

He had spent months learning not to hide.

I had to learn transparency was not broadcasting.

Then we argued.

Real argument.

He accused me of enjoying seeing Veronica exposed.

I accused him of protecting her.

He left the room.

Came back twenty minutes later.

“I’m not protecting her.”

“I know.”

“And you’re not enjoying it.”

“I did for a minute.”

He looked at me.

Honesty.

Then:

“That scares me.”

“Me too.”

We did not become perfect because Veronica was worse.

That mattered.
