Chapter 5 - Daniel’s childhood
Daniel defended his mother for years because resistance had always been expensive.
Not financially.
Emotionally.
If he refused a family dinner:
Veronica stopped calling for a week.
If he chose Christmas morning with me:
She cried about Arthur.
If he changed jobs without asking:
She told relatives he was “unstable.”
If he declined money:
She transferred it anyway.
Then reminded him later.
Daniel described his childhood in one sentence:
“Mom never hit me. She just made disobedience feel like death.”
I looked at him.
“That’s dramatic.”
“I know.”
Then:
“It’s also true.”
He started therapy after the baby shower.
Not because I forced him.
Because when he shoved Veronica away from me, he realized he had spent thirty-five years either obeying or exploding.
No middle.
His therapist’s advice did not appear as magical solutions.
But Daniel began noticing patterns.
The shower.
The name.
The education money.
Elaine.
Then our own finances.
Did Veronica ever give us money?
Yes.
Wedding:
$12,000.
Kitchen renovation:
$18,000.
Emergency roof:
$9,500.
Were those gifts?
We believed so.
Any note?
No.
Any repayment?
No.
Could money have come from Elaine?
Unknown.
That became terrifying.
Daniel wanted to return everything immediately.
Our attorney said:
“Don’t transfer random money before tracing.”
Good.
If Veronica gave us funds from her own account years ago, no issue.
If some were misappropriated from Elaine, good-faith recipient questions could arise.
But no one had demanded repayment.
Facts first.
Then Veronica hired criminal attorney:
Paul Mason.
She stopped speaking directly to police.
Good.
Rights matter even when someone behaves badly.
She also hired civil attorney for the POA accounting.
Then family campaign began.
Texts from cousins:
Your shower was a disaster.
Daniel pushed his mother.
Claire shouldn’t have humiliated Veronica publicly.
I wanted to send the wallet video to all of them.
I did not.
Elaine’s financial investigation was not family entertainment.
Daniel sent one group message:
Mom struck my pregnant wife and attempted to take her phone. Police are handling the incident. Elaine’s finances are private and are being reviewed. Please stop contacting Claire.
Then blocked the worst offenders.
No social-media war.
