Chapter 8 - Veronica’s story
Veronica gave one voluntary civil deposition before invoking rights more carefully in criminal case.
She was not cartoonish.
That made it worse.
She believed Elaine had become dependent on her.
“I drove her everywhere.”
True.
“I handled contractors.”
True.
“I stayed after surgery.”
True.
“I missed work.”
She had retired early, but still.
“I did things Grace should have done.”
Grace looked furious.
Veronica continued:
“Elaine told me I could use her card for family things.”
Elaine denied broad permission.
Then the shower.
“I wanted Claire to have something beautiful.”
“Using Elaine’s money?”
“My sister has more than she needs.”
That sentence mattered.
“Did she agree?”
“She always says no first.”
There.
Then:
“Did you believe no meant yes later?”
Veronica’s lawyer objected to characterization.
Fair.
Veronica said:
“She complains and then tells me to handle it.”
Pattern.
Then baby name.
“Did you believe funding the shower gave you naming authority?”
“No.”
“Why did you say you got to decide?”
“I was angry.”
“Had you purchased personalized Vivian items?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel told me they hadn’t decided.”
Daniel had said:
“We’re not telling anyone yet.”
Different.
Then $25,000 education promise.
Where would it come from?
“My savings.”
Statements showed she had:
$186,000 personal brokerage.
Could afford it.
So not every promise was Elaine’s money.
Important.
Then why did she tell Elaine:
“Vivian should have a real legacy”?
Veronica said she expected Elaine might also contribute voluntarily.
Could be.
Then the wallet.
“I was taking cash for tips.”
“Why not ask Elaine?”
“She was talking.”
“Why look around?”
“I didn’t.”
Video showed she did.
Then Veronica said:
“Claire has hated me for years.”
I did not.
I had resented her.
Different.
She said I used pregnancy to control Daniel.
No evidence.
She said Daniel had become weak.
That was opinion.
Then one useful truth:
She had paid our $18,000 renovation gift from her own brokerage.
Trace confirmed.
Good.
The $9,500 roof gift?
Her account.
Wedding contribution?
Her account.
Our home was not secretly built with Elaine’s money.
Relief.
The baby shower was the main direct benefit to us from disputed funds.
That narrowed the story.
Then Monica Reyes said:
