Chapter 25 - The education account

The $25,000 promise remained.
Veronica brought it up once.
“I still want to help Nora with college.”
I froze.
Daniel said:
“How?”
“My money.”
“Documented?”
Veronica almost became angry.
Then stopped.
“Yes.”
Could we accept?
Our attorney said:
Gift is legally possible.
But emotional strings matter.
We did not need it.
We said:
“Not now.”
Veronica looked wounded.
Then:
“Ever?”
Daniel answered:
“Maybe later.”
She nodded.
No threat.
Then Elaine surprised us.
She wanted to contribute $5,000 to Nora’s 529.
I laughed.
“No.”
She laughed too.
“Why?”
“Because this family needs six months without someone buying authority.”
Elaine said:
“Fair.”
Then she wrote Nora a card with no money.
I kept it.
Six months later? Story timeframe maybe within months. We can revisit in final only perhaps.
Then Daniel and I opened our own 529.
Initial contribution:
$3,000.
Automatic monthly:
$250.
Not impressive.
Ours.
Then we set a family gift rule.
Any gift to Nora over $2,500:
Written as gift.
No naming conditions.
No custody conditions.
No implied decision rights.
Financial planner thought we were overly formal.
Maybe.
But paperwork can protect relationships when people stop treating it as insult.
Then Veronica asked:
“Can I put five hundred in for Christmas?”
Daniel looked at me.
I nodded.
“Yes.”
She did.
Statement:
Gift.
No condition.
May you like
No drama.
That was how she learned generosity without ownership.
