Chapter 14 - The baby arrives

At thirty-eight weeks and four days, my water broke at 5:12 a.m.
No family confrontation.
No courtroom.
I woke Daniel.
“My water broke.”
He sat upright.
“What?”
“Exactly what I said.”
Then panic.
Hospital bag.
Car seat.
Phone charger.
Daniel forgot his shoes and made it to garage in socks.
I laughed so hard I had a contraction.
At the hospital:
Labor progressed normally.
No complication attributed to the baby-shower slap.
No blood-pressure crisis.
No emergency C-section.
Twelve hours later our daughter was born.
Healthy.
Seven pounds, one ounce.
Name:
Nora Elise Hart.
Not Vivian.
Not Rose.
Not a compromise.
Our choice.
Daniel held her.
Cried.
Then said:
“Hi, Nora.”
That sentence felt larger than it should.
Veronica was not at the hospital.
Her probation/contact condition and our written boundary made that clear.
Elaine visited the next day.
She brought no money.
No giant gift.
Just flowers and a children’s book.
She looked at Nora.
“Beautiful.”
Then:
“Good name.”
I laughed.
Later Daniel asked whether we should send Veronica a photo.
I wanted to say no.
Then asked:
“Do you want to?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She’s her grandmother.”
That was not enough by itself.
But it mattered.
We sent one photograph through Daniel.
No hospital location.
Message:
Nora Elise was born healthy. Claire and baby are doing well. We are not receiving visitors.
Veronica replied:
Nora.
Nothing else for two hours.
Then:
She’s beautiful.
No name attack.
No demand.
May you like
Daniel cried quietly.
I did not tease him.
