Chapter 11 - Margaret’s counterattack

Accuracy did not make Margaret suddenly gentle.

Two weeks later, she sent a six-page email to family.

Subject:

Thanksgiving and the false story being told about me.

She wrote:

Evan had become:

“increasingly disrespectful and manipulative around food.”

Claire had:

“encouraged him to treat every preference as a boundary.”

The dog bowl was:

“a foolish joke intended to lighten ongoing tension.”

Claire responded with:

“serious physical violence.”

Daniel had been:

“caught between two explosive women.”

That sentence almost made me laugh.

Then:

Robert had abandoned his marriage:

“based on one-sided accounts.”

She asked relatives not to participate in:

“the campaign to portray me as abusive.”

I did not reply.

Growth.

Melissa? Different story. Here Daniel’s cousin Eric did.

Eric wrote all:

“I was at the table. Nobody needs to use the word abuse to say putting kibble in front of Evan was deliberate and humiliating.”

Margaret responded privately.

He did not share.

Good.

Robert wrote nothing.

Daniel called me.

“My mother’s email is making things worse.”

“Yes.”

“Should we send the text screenshot?”

“No.”

He sounded surprised.

“Why?”

“Because this is family email, not discovery.”

He went quiet.

“I thought you wanted everyone to know.”

“I want the people making decisions about Evan to know.”

That was a change in me.

Anger still wanted a courtroom at every dinner table.

I was learning to choose actual forums.
