Chapter 16 - My mistake with Evan
My most painful parenting mistake happened in February.
Evan and I were leaving therapy.
He said:
“I think Dad is better now.”
I was angry after a lawyer call.
Wrong moment.
I answered:
“Better doesn’t change that he chose Grandma.”
Evan stopped walking.
The sentence hung between us.
I wanted it back.
“Mom?”
I crouched.
“That was unfair.”
“But he did.”
“He failed you at Thanksgiving. Yes.”
“Then why unfair?”
“Because I turned one terrible choice into a permanent label about Dad.”
He looked confused.
I forced myself to explain.
“He chose not to confront Grandma in that moment. That hurt you. He is also making different choices now.”
“Are you still mad?”
“Yes.”
“At him?”
“Yes.”
“Then why can’t I be?”
“You can.”
I rubbed my forehead.
“The problem is I put my anger inside your relationship with him.”
Dr. Lin and I discussed it the next week.
She said:
“Children do not need false neutrality. They also should not become the container for a parent’s marital verdict.”
Wonderful.
Another sentence I hated because it was useful.
I apologized to Daniel too.
Not because he needed protection from truth.
Because I had used Evan as audience.
Daniel said:
“Thank you.”
