Chapter 21 - Daniel’s apology to Evan
The best apology happened without me in the room.
Dr. Lin later told me only what Evan allowed to be shared.
Daniel asked Evan:
“Do you want me to explain Thanksgiving?”
Evan said yes.
Daniel said:
“Grandma warned me.”
Not:
sort of.
Not:
maybe.
“She sent me the picture of the bowl.”
Evan already knew.
“I told myself she was joking because believing that was easier than confronting her.”
There.
“When we sat down, I realized she wasn’t joking.”
Evan asked:
“Why didn’t you throw it away?”
Daniel cried.
Good.
Not because he deserved pain.
Because he finally stayed in the feeling instead of escaping.
“I was afraid of her.”
Evan asked:
“More than you cared about me?”
Hard.
Daniel answered carefully.
“No. I cared about you more. But in that moment I acted like avoiding her anger mattered more.”
Accurate.
Then:
“That was my failure. Not yours.”
Evan asked:
“Did I eat bad?”
“No.”
“Do I complain too much?”
“Sometimes.”
Evan laughed.
Important.
Daniel continued:
“You being annoying sometimes does not mean anybody gets to humiliate you.”
Specific.
No saint child required.
Evan asked:
“Are you scared of Grandma now?”
“Less.”
“Why?”
“Because I learned I can let her be angry.”
That may have been the most important thing Daniel taught him.

Let someone be angry without reorganizing your morals around it.
