Chapter 23 - Robert’s relationship with Evan
Robert had his own apology.
He did not serve the bowl.
Was not in the room for the opening moment.
Still:
“I should have noticed earlier.”
Evan asked:
“Were you scared of Grandma?”
Robert smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“You’re old.”
I covered my mouth.
Robert laughed.
“Fear does not retire.”
Evan considered that.
Then:
“Did she make you eat stuff?”
“No. I ate everything.”
Of course.
“But I watched your dad struggle with meals when he was a kid.”
“Did you help him?”
“Not enough.”
Robert did not turn Margaret into monster.
Good.
He said:
“I told myself your dad had to learn to manage his mother. He was a child. That was my job too.”
Evan nodded.
Then:
“Adults mess up a lot.”
Robert laughed.
“You have no idea.”
Their relationship continued easily because Robert respected boundaries from the beginning.
He did not use gifts to bypass me.
Did not make Evan comfort him about the divorce.
Did not tell him:
Grandma ruined our marriage.
