Chapter 26 - What Daniel became

Daniel never became fearless around Margaret.

That would have been dishonest.

He became willing to tolerate her disappointment.

Different.

More useful.

When Margaret called one Saturday:

“I need you to come fix my garage door.”

Daniel said:

“I have Evan.”

“Bring him.”

“He doesn’t want to.”

“I’m his grandmother.”

“I know.”

“He can sit in the house.”

“No.”

Margaret became angry.

Daniel let her.

Then fixed the door Monday after work.

Not punishment.

Boundary.

He told me later:

“My heart was pounding.”

I smiled.

“Good job?”

“Do not patronize me.”

Fair.

His relationship with Evan improved.

Baseball games.

Homework.

Camping.

Arguments.

Evan still occasionally weaponized Thanksgiving.

“Why do I have to eat broccoli?”

“Because broccoli is not kibble.”

“Trauma.”

Daniel stared.

“Do not use therapy against me.”

Evan laughed.

Normal family humor requires enough safety that the joke does not threaten the child.

They found it.

Daniel and I became decent co-parents.

Not best friends.

No remarriage twist.

No longing looks at school concerts.

The marriage ended.

The family did not.

That distinction mattered.
