Chapter 17 - The text before Thanksgiving
The main evidentiary detail came from Margaret’s phone during my criminal case? No need subpoena for family law perhaps Daniel already had his message. But a second thread emerged because Robert had access to his own shared family iPad? We need grounded. Margaret voluntarily provided certain messages during divorce discovery with Robert, and Robert later shared only what counsel allowed? Could complicate. Simpler: Daniel remembered an earlier text and retrieved it from his own conversation.
Three weeks before Thanksgiving.
Margaret:
Evan told me my roast smelled gross again.
Daniel:
He says everything smells weird when onions are in it.
Margaret:
You both cater to him.
Daniel:
Claire says pick battles.
Margaret:
Claire has never picked one she didn’t want to win.
Daniel did not reply.
Then:
Margaret:
One day he is going to embarrass the wrong person.
Daniel:
He’s nine, Mom.
Margaret:
Nine is old enough for manners.
Then Thanksgiving week:
Margaret:
If he complains Thursday I’m not making a special plate.
Daniel:
Don’t.
Margaret:
I mean it.
Daniel:
Just serve dinner.
Then the dog-bowl photo Thanksgiving morning.
Daniel had received warning after warning.
Not a detailed plan.
Enough.
He gave the messages to his therapist before he showed me.
Then asked:
“Do you want to see them?”
“Yes.”
After reading, I said:
“You knew more than you’ve admitted.”
He looked sick.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because each message felt small.”

The sentence Robert had used.
Mom’s comment.
A joke.
A photo.
A warning.
No single item felt enough to blow up Thanksgiving.
