Chapter 15 - The basement door becomes evidence

Investigators reconstructed the service door.

The lock had scratches near the latch.

Not from Derek.

From me hitting it with the wrench.

They found my palm print on the inside handle.

Expected.

Derek’s DNA on part of the exterior door area?

Also expected possibly, because he had worked in the basement historically.

Weak evidence.

Then they found something more useful.

A fiber snagged on the chain.

Dark synthetic material.

Consistent in composition with Derek’s work jacket.

Not unique.

Could have come from previous contact.

His attorney attacked it.

Correctly.

Then a video from a rear parking-lot camera showed a person in a dark jacket exiting the basement service door at 9:31.

Face unclear.

Build similar to Derek.

Again:

Not enough alone.

The prosecution did not get a single cinematic clue.

It got a stack.
