Chapter 20 - The money case stays separate

The credit account did not become part of the same criminal case automatically.
That frustrated me.
I wanted one story.
Law gives you several.
The card issuer conducted fraud review.
Because Derek was my spouse and had access to household information, questions of consent became complicated.
I disputed the account.
Provided statements.
Texts.
Application records.
Some charges were removed.
Others remained contested because they benefited the household and because my prior messages included vague language about him “handling bills.”
A civil settlement eventually resolved most of it.
Derek became responsible for a substantial portion of the balance.
I absorbed some shared household expenses.
Not satisfying.
Accurate.
The two business lines were his.
Not mine.
The total financial damage hurt.
It did not ruin me.
More important:
I began reading every statement myself.
Not obsessively.
