Chapter 2

Daniel had left the house that morning believing his children were safe.
That was the part that would haunt him.
He had kissed Noah’s forehead before work.
He had promised Lily they would finish her dinosaur puzzle after dinner.
Claire had been standing near the kitchen island in a silk robe, scrolling through her phone, barely looking up.
“Don’t be late,” Daniel said.
Claire smiled without warmth.
“I know how to watch my own children.”
He had ignored the tone.
That was his mistake.
For weeks, something had felt wrong inside the house.
Lily had become quieter.
Noah cried harder whenever Claire handed him away.
Diane, Claire’s mother, had started coming over too often, moving through the house like she owned it.
Daniel told himself he was tired.
Too much work.
Too many bills.
Too many tense dinners.
But two months earlier, he had installed hidden cameras after Lily whispered that Grandma got angry when Daddy was gone.
He did not want to believe it.
So he watched nothing at first.
He simply let the system record.
Proof, he told himself, was only for emergencies.
Now he was standing in the middle of one.
His daughter’s knees were wet with milk.
His son was hungry and shaking from exhaustion.
