Chapter 7

The house felt different as Daniel carried both children toward the doorway.

It was the same suburban Columbus home.

Same cabinets.

Same tiled floor.

Same daylight fading outside the windows.

But something had been broken.

Not the milk carton.

Not the routine.

Trust.

Lily leaned against his shoulder, trying to be brave.

Noah slept uneasily against his chest.

Daniel moved slowly, careful with both of them.

At the doorway, Lily whispered, “Will Mommy be mad?”

Daniel stopped.

He looked back at the kitchen.

The spilled milk still spread across the floor.

The towel remained where Lily had dropped it.

The phone on the counter kept playing the security footage in silence.

“No,” Daniel said. “She does not get to be mad at you.”

Lily blinked.

“She doesn’t?”

“No.”

That small answer seemed to loosen something inside her.

Daniel kissed the top of her messy hair.

“You are the child. She is the adult.”

Lily swallowed.

“I tried really hard.”

“I know.”

His voice nearly broke, but he held it together.

There would be time later to fall apart.

Not in front of her.

Not while she still needed him steady.

Daniel stepped outside with both children in his arms.

Behind him, the house remained bright and quiet.
