Chapter 5

Daniel had spent years trusting Claire with the household accounts.

Not because he was careless.

Because marriage was supposed to mean shared life.

Claire handled school payments, medical bills, childcare schedules, and family purchases. She said it made sense because Daniel worked long hours.

At first, it did.

Then the passwords changed.

Statements became harder to find.

Claire started saying things like, “You’re too stressed to manage everything.”

Diane backed her up.

“A good husband doesn’t interrogate his wife over money.”

Daniel let it go too many times.

Now Claire’s words from the video repeated in his head.

The accounts will be empty.

Not might be.

Will be.

Planned.

Daniel looked toward his laptop in the adjoining room.

He wanted to open every bank file immediately.

He wanted to search every transfer.

He wanted to call Claire and demand answers.

But Lily winced when she shifted in the chair.

Noah whimpered around the bottle.

Daniel closed his eyes for one second.

Priorities.

He could rebuild money.

He could not gamble with his children’s safety.

He photographed the abandoned bottle.

The floor.

The towel.

The baby formula.

Then he took a clean blanket from the dryer and wrapped Noah carefully.

He helped Lily into dry socks and a warm hoodie.

“Are we in trouble?” she whispered.

Daniel knelt before her.

“No. The grown-ups are.”
