Chapter 9

Lily fell asleep sitting up.

Daniel noticed her head nodding and gently eased her down against the pillow.

Noah slept in the carrier beside him, tiny chest rising and falling.

For the first time since Daniel entered the kitchen, the room was quiet.

That quiet almost destroyed him.

Because in the silence, he could feel everything he had held back.

The shock.

The guilt.

The rage.

The image of Lily kneeling in milk.

The sound of Noah crying.

Claire’s voice from the footage.

By the time Daniel finds out, the accounts will be empty.

He opened his phone again.

Not to watch the clip.

He already knew every second.

He checked that the files had uploaded.

They had.

Attorney.

Secure archive.

External drive.

Cloud backup.

Saved.

Preserved.

Beyond Claire’s reach.

Daniel looked at Lily’s small hand resting outside the blanket.

There were faint pressure marks on her shoulders from carrying Noah.

He photographed them once more because someone would ask later.

Someone would try to soften it.

Explain it.

Minimize it.

Say Lily was dramatic.

Say Claire only stepped out for a moment.

Say Diane meant well.

Daniel would not let the truth become a debate.
