Chapter 6

Lily was afraid to leave the kitchen.
That told Daniel more than words.
She kept looking toward the hallway as if Claire might return and punish her for moving.
Daniel kept his tone steady.
“Look at me, Lily.”
She did.
“You did the right thing by trying to help Noah.”
Her lips trembled.
“Mommy said if I called you, you would be mad.”
“I am not mad at you.”
“At Mommy?”
Daniel paused.
He would not put his rage on a seven-year-old’s shoulders.
“I am mad that you were left alone.”
Lily nodded slowly.
Noah’s tiny hand curled against Daniel’s shirt.
The baby had stopped crying, but his exhaustion showed in every heavy blink.
Daniel sent the saved footage to a secure address.
Then to his attorney.
Then to a trusted family friend who was a pediatric nurse.
He did not write a long message.
Just:
I found them like this. We are going to the hospital. Preserve everything.
Within seconds, replies began coming in.
Call me.
I’m saving this.
Go now.
Daniel placed his phone face-up on the counter while the footage continued silently.
Claire leaving.
Diane walking out.
The unknown man’s hand at Claire’s waist.
Daniel looked once more at the screen.
Then at his children.
He did not need the full outcome tonight.

He needed them evaluated, protected, and away from that kitchen.
