Chapter 4

The footage began in the same bright kitchen.
Diane stood near the island holding Noah, irritated by his crying.
Lily hovered by the refrigerator, small and anxious.
Diane thrust the baby into Lily’s arms.
Even through the tiny phone screen, Daniel could see Lily struggle under the weight.
Noah was not hurt.
But he was too heavy for her tired little body.
Diane pointed toward the bottle.
Lily tried to reach for it while still holding him.
The milk carton tipped.
White liquid poured across the tile.
Diane did not help.
She stepped back as if the mess offended her more than the crying baby.
Then Claire entered in a red evening dress.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
A woman prepared for a party, not motherhood.
Lily said something Daniel could not hear clearly, but he could see the shape of her mouth.
Mommy.
Claire looked at Noah.
Then at the milk.
Then at Lily.
Her expression held no panic.
Only annoyance.
Diane grabbed her purse.
Claire glanced toward the hallway.
Then the man appeared.
Well-dressed.
Comfortable.
Too close.
His hand settled at Claire’s waist like he had done it before.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
He did not know him.
But Claire did.
That was obvious.
Then Claire looked toward the camera, believing it was dead.
“By the time Daniel finds out, the accounts will be empty.”
Daniel saved the clip three times.
Local.
Cloud.
Secure backup.
The children were behind him at the chair.

He did not let them see his face.
