Chapter 3

Lily tried to apologize while Daniel dried her knees.

“I spilled the milk.”

Daniel crouched in front of her.

“No, sweetheart.”

Her eyes filled again.

“Mommy said Noah needed his bottle. Grandma said I was big enough.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened, but his voice stayed soft.

“You are seven.”

Lily looked down.

“I tried to hold him right.”

“You did.”

“He kept crying.”

“You kept him safe.”

That was true.

It broke him that it was true.

Lily had done what adults in the house refused to do.

She had held her baby brother until her back hurt.

She had tried to clean the floor so no one would get mad.

She had obeyed the warning not to call.

Daniel wrapped a clean towel around her shoulders.

Noah’s crying softened against his chest, but the baby still rooted weakly, searching for food.

Daniel warmed a bottle with one hand while keeping both children close.

He had never felt so much anger in his life.

But anger could wait.

Evidence first.

Hospital first.

Children first.

He took photos of the kitchen exactly as he found it.

Spilled milk.

Overturned carton.

Wet towel.

Dirty clothes.

The phone abandoned near the counter.

The pressure marks on Lily’s shoulders.

Then he opened the camera archive again.

He did not watch because he wanted to.

He watched because what happened in that kitchen needed to survive longer than Claire’s excuses.
