Chapter 12 - EMMA TELLS THE TRUTH

Emma’s child interview changed everything again.
She was twelve.
Old enough to understand some consequences.
Young enough that adults had shaped the entire frame.
Grandma told her:
Noah gets everything.
Attention.
Insurance money.
A special birthday.
Emma’s family was “struggling” because Aunt Rachel stopped helping enough.
If Emma embarrassed Noah, Aunt Rachel would scream.
Then everyone would finally see Aunt Rachel’s “real personality.”
“What did Grandma promise?”
“An iPad.”
“Did your mom know?”
“She said not to do it.”
“Why did you?”
Emma stared at the floor.
“Grandma said Mom always ruins things by being scared.”
Then:
“She said I was the only brave girl in the family.”
Manipulation wears compliments well.
Emma admitted grabbing Noah’s head.
She expected frosting and yelling.
Not my kick.
“Did you want Aunt Rachel to hurt you?”
“No.”
“Did you know Grandma wanted her to?”
Emma began crying.
“I think she wanted her to slap me.”
