Chapter 8 - ASHLEY’S FIRST CONFESSION
Ashley came to Helen’s office.
No Emma.
Her attorney attended.
Good.
This had passed family conversation.
She described the accident.
Noah refused to let Emma ride his new bicycle.
Emma followed him down the driveway.
She grabbed the back of his shirt.
Noah kept moving.
Then Emma reached for the handlebar.
The bike swerved.
Noah went into the road.
The delivery van struck the rear wheel.
“Did Emma push him intentionally toward traffic?”
“No.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“She wanted him to stop.”
“Why?”
“She wanted the bike.”
“Then why lie?”
Ashley looked at me.
“Mom said police would blame Emma.”
“She caused it.”
“She was eleven.”
“And Noah was six.”
Ashley cried.
“I know.”
My anger sharpened.
“Did you know about the settlement?”
“Yes.”
“How soon?”
“Two months after.”
“Did you know Mom forged me?”
She hesitated.
“My attorney—”
Her lawyer nodded.
“Answer if truthful.”
Ashley whispered:
“I knew the signature wasn’t yours.”
My hands curled.
“And you witnessed it anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Mom said if you handled the settlement, you’d sue the delivery company and reopen the investigation.”
“What was wrong with reopening it?”
“Emma.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So you traded my son’s rights for protecting yours.”
“No.”
“What would you call it?”
“I thought Mom was putting the money away for Noah.”
“Did you receive any?”
Her eyes closed.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
The iPad.
Dance classes.
Private-school tuition.
Trips.
Ashley whispered:
“Mom said it was family reimbursement.”
“For what?”
“For emotional damages because Emma witnessed the accident.”
I stared.
My son got hit.
Her daughter received money for seeing it.
Then Ashley added:
“There’s something else.”
Of course.
“Mom made Emma sign a statement.”
“What statement?”
“That Noah told her before the accident he wanted to ride into the road.”
My body went cold.
Suicidal intent.
A six-year-old.
They had tried to transform a child’s crash into self-endangerment.
“Why?”
Ashley whispered:

“Because if the insurer thought Noah caused the accident himself, the family wouldn’t be questioned as closely.”
The settlement had been built on a lie larger than I understood.
