Chapter 7 - THE POLICE REPORT CHANGED
Helen obtained the original accident file.
Two versions.
The public report I had seen.
And an initial responding officer’s field notes.
Child witness Emma Bennett states she “grabbed bike because he wouldn’t let me ride.”
Later formal statement:
Noah accelerated downhill and lost control.
My stomach turned.
“Why is the first statement missing?”
“It isn’t missing,” Helen said. “It was classified as preliminary and superseded after follow-up.”
“Who conducted follow-up?”
Insurance investigator.
Then police added supplemental clarification after family interviews.
Ashley.
My parents.
Emma.
Everyone said Emma had tried to “steady” Noah.
Not grab.
Then I saw a notation.
Residential surveillance may exist. Homeowner reports system inactive during incident.
My father’s camera system was active.
I knew because I used it to check whether they were home before driving over sometimes.
“Dad lied.”
“Possibly.”
“No. I saw those cameras operating that month.”
“We need records.”
The security company still had account metadata.
Not video necessarily.
Eight months was long.
Helen requested preservation immediately.
That evening, Ashley called.
I answered with Helen listening beside me.
“I need to tell you something.”
“Do it.”
“Emma touched the bicycle.”
“How?”
Silence.
“Ashley.”
“She pulled the handlebar.”
My breath stopped.
“Why?”
“They were fighting.”
“Did you see it?”
“Yes.”
“And you told police he lost control?”
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
She started crying.
“Mom said Emma could be taken away.”
