Chapter 14 - ASHLEY’S SECOND CONFESSION

Ashley asked to meet me alone.
I refused.
Therapist’s office.
Neutral room.
She sat across from me holding tissues.
“I signed because of Emma.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You don’t.”
I waited.
“After the accident, Mom said police might charge Emma.”
“She was eleven.”
“I know now it wasn’t that simple.”
“What did Mom say?”
“That if they decided Emma intentionally pushed Noah into traffic, social services could remove her from me.”
Fear.
Specific.
Powerful.
“Then she showed me the settlement paperwork.”
“What did that have to do with anything?”
“She said if you took control, you’d hire your own lawyer.”
“I would have.”
“And the lawyer would find the first police statement.”
“Yes.”
Ashley’s hands trembled.
“Mom said if I signed, she’d handle it quietly.”
“And you believed her?”
“I needed to.”
There.
Not innocence.
Need.
“Did you know she would spend Noah’s money?”
“Not at first.”
“When did you know?”
“Four months ago.”
“What happened?”
“I saw a tuition payment.”
“For Emma.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ashley cried.
“Because by then I was in it.”
That was the second confession.
