Chapter 16 - THE MISSING VIDEO

My father denied taking the video.
Then insurer notes contradicted him.
Neighbor:
Copy released to Richard Bennett at family request, June 18, 4:32 p.m.
My father signed.
Why was it not in the claim file?
He said the USB drive was corrupted.
The neighbor no longer had the footage in the app.
Cloud retention expired.
For two days, I thought that was the end.
Then the neighbor’s husband remembered their doorbell system also backed up clips to a local network-attached storage drive because he worked in IT.
The drive had been replaced.
Old one stored in their basement.
Eight months.
Dust.
Possibility.
Digital forensics recovered fragments.
Not yet enough.
A frame.
Noah on bicycle.
Emma behind him.
Another frame.
Ashley on patio.
Then corruption.
The investigator said:
“We may recover more.”
That night I could not sleep.
Noah came into my room.
“Mom?”
“What?”
“Did Emma make me crash?”
My heart stopped.
“Why are you asking?”
“I remember her hand.”
I sat up.
“What hand?”
“On my bike.”
He touched his forehead.
“I thought it was a dream.”
Trauma memory is messy.
I did not question him further.
“Tell your therapist tomorrow.”
“Am I supposed to be mad?”
“You’re allowed to feel whatever you feel.”
“What if I’m not?”
May you like
That was Noah.
The adults had built a war around an emotion the injured child did not even know he wanted.
