Chapter 10

No arrest was completed inside the Helena memorial hall.

No courtroom proceeding began.

No insurance payout was shown.

No final legal outcome was revealed beneath the chandeliers.

The confrontation ended with Elena Mercer standing beside the flag-draped coffin prepared for her body.

Her black tactical uniform was streaked with mud, snow, and dried blood.

A shallow cut marked her forehead.

Her boots left wet prints across the polished marble.

Her framed military portrait stood behind the empty coffin, surrounded by white flowers and American flags.

On the table beside it, the heavy steel padlock rested on top of the insurance papers.

Dominic remained on the floor, staring at the lock with terror he could no longer disguise.

Chloe stood several feet away from him now, the red gown that once looked glamorous suddenly looking like evidence of the life she thought was waiting.

Colonel Harris and the honor guard stayed near the coffin.

Special Agent Grant stood near the closed doors with two investigators, evidence bag and recorder in hand.

The full case had not been revealed.

But the first crack was already public.

Dominic had seen his wife alive and shouted the one sentence no innocent man would ever say.

“You were supposed to die in that cabin!”

Elena did not need to shout back.

She had survived the mountain.

Carried the lock.

Reached her own funeral.

And placed the proof where everyone could see it.

The coffin stayed empty.

Because Dominic had left the wrong soldier to freeze.
