Chapter 3

Elena Mercer was not easy to kill.

That should have been obvious to Dominic.

She was an Army survival instructor.

She had taught soldiers how to endure cold, hunger, fear, injury, isolation, and panic.

She had trained men twice her size to think clearly when their bodies begged them to give up.

Dominic knew that.

He had heard the stories.

Watched her wake before dawn.

Seen scars from training accidents and missions she never discussed.

But he had mistaken marriage for weakness.

He believed betrayal would do what winter could not.

The cabin had been remote, high in the Montana mountains, hidden behind snow-choked roads and dead service zones.

Dominic told her it was a weekend away.

A reset.

A chance to fix what had become strained.

Elena had gone because a part of her still wanted to believe there was something worth saving.

By the time she realized the trip was not a marriage retreat, the door had already closed.

The padlock had already snapped shut.

Dominic had left.

No phone.

No heat.

No clear way down.

He forgot one thing.

Survival instructors do not wait for rescue the way ordinary people do.

They inventory pain.

They measure time.

They turn objects into tools.

And they remember every mistake the person leaving them behind makes.
