Chapter 8

Dominic tried to rebuild the lie.
Men like him always do.
“She’s confused,” he said, voice shaking. “She’s injured. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Elena looked at him.
“I know exactly where you left me.”
His mouth closed.
Chloe backed another step away.
Dominic turned toward the mourners.
“This is not what it looks like.”
Colonel Harris finally spoke, voice low and severe.
“Then explain the cabin.”
Dominic swallowed.
No answer came.
Because there was no innocent explanation for a husband who saw his wife alive at her own funeral and shouted that she was supposed to die.
Elena reached into her vest pocket and removed a torn strip of fabric.
Not enough to reveal the full evidence.
Just enough for Dominic to recognize it.
His eyes widened.
“You kept that?”
Elena’s expression did not change.
“I kept everything I could carry.”
Grant watched Dominic’s reaction carefully.
So did the officers.
So did the funeral cameras.
Chloe looked at Dominic like she was seeing the real man for the first time.
But Elena knew better.
Chloe had seen enough before today.
Maybe not all.
But enough.
The final truth would come later.
Not in this hall.
Not before Elena could be examined, treated, and debriefed.
May you like
For now, the lie was bleeding out in public.
