Chapter 4

The padlock became her calendar.

Every time Elena touched it, she remembered the sound it made when Dominic trapped her inside.

Metal closing.

Footsteps leaving.

The engine starting.

Then silence.

At first, she saved strength.

She checked the windows.

The vents.

The floorboards.

The old chimney.

She found a rusted hinge, a cracked stove tool, and enough stubbornness to keep breathing.

The cabin was cold enough to turn thought slow.

So Elena made thought mechanical.

Water first.

Warmth second.

Exit third.

Evidence always.

She carved marks into wood to track hours.

She wrapped her hands with torn fabric.

She used a metal edge to work at the frame near the latch until her gloves split and her fingers bled.

When she finally broke free, the storm had not ended.

It had simply changed directions.

Elena walked.

Fell.

Got up.

Walked again.

She followed the terrain because roads were buried.

She saved the padlock because survival was not enough.

Survival without proof would give Dominic room to lie.

By the time she reached help, she knew one thing with perfect clarity.

Dominic would already be grieving her in public.

So she asked the first officer only one question.

“Where is my funeral?”
