Chapter 5

Colonel Harris recognized her before the civilians did.
Elena saw it in his eyes.
Shock first.
Then assessment.
Then fury.
He did not rush toward her because soldiers know when a person standing on discipline is one breath away from collapse.
He simply straightened.
Then the honor guard straightened with him.
That small movement traveled through the hall.
Uniforms recognized what the family refused to understand.
Elena was alive.
Injured.
Standing.
Dominic, meanwhile, was still on the floor.
His confession hung in the air.
“You were supposed to die in that cabin!”
No lawyer could polish that sentence quickly enough.
No grief speech could cover it.
No widow’s performance could rewrite it.
Chloe slowly pulled her hand away from him.
“Dominic… what did you do?”
He looked at her as if she had betrayed him by asking the obvious.
Elena almost pitied her.
Almost.
Then she remembered Chloe’s name on the insurance paperwork.
She did not reveal that yet.
The final evidence would wait.
Not because Elena lacked anger.
Because anger is loud and evidence is patient.
She raised the padlock for the officers, the mourners, and the cameras to see.
“You left the wrong soldier to freeze.”
Dominic tried to stand.
The honor guard shifted.
Not attacking.
Not restraining.
Simply closing paths.
The hall itself seemed to understand he was no longer a grieving husband.
May you like
He was a suspect who had spoken too soon.
