Chapter 6

Chloe Bennett had dressed like a woman preparing for a new life.

Elena noticed the details because details mattered.

The red gown.

The careful hair.

The way she stayed near Dominic but not too near the coffin.

The way her panic was not grief.

It was exposure.

Chloe stared at the padlock.

Then at the empty coffin.

Then at Dominic.

“What did you do?” she whispered again.

Dominic snapped, “Shut up.”

That was another mistake.

The room heard that too.

Elena did not smile.

She had no strength left for satisfaction.

She only moved toward the table beside her framed portrait.

There, among the funeral programs and formal papers, lay the insurance documents Dominic had probably expected to process after the service.

She set the padlock on top of them.

Heavy.

Wet.

Real.

The sound of metal against paper made several mourners flinch.

Special Agent Grant had not moved far from the rear doors.

Elena had noticed him the moment she entered.

Dark suit.

Controlled posture.

Investigators on either side.

He had not come for a funeral either.

He had come because Elena had made one call before walking into the hall.

Not to Dominic.

Not to family.
