Chapter 7

Special Agent Grant stepped forward only after Dominic spoke.
That mattered.
He let the room hear the confession first.
Let it settle.
Let the witnesses understand the words before authority entered the scene.
“Nobody leaves this hall.”
The rear doors closed firmly.
No one screamed.
No one ran.
The military officers stayed composed.
The civilians froze.
Dominic looked toward the side exit.
The honor guard had already shifted enough to make that path difficult.
Not blocked violently.
Just controlled.
Grant held a sealed evidence bag and a small recorder.
No labels were readable.
No documents were shown.
No final legal outcome was explained.
But Dominic’s face told the room he knew what those items meant.
Elena turned toward Grant.
“Cabin lock,” she said.
Her voice was rough from cold and exhaustion.
Grant nodded toward the padlock.
“Preserved.”
That single word gave Elena more relief than applause ever could.
Preserved.
The lock.
The confession.
The funeral cameras.
The witnesses.
The evidence trail Dominic thought would disappear beneath flowers and speeches.
Chloe slowly stood, one hand over her mouth.
Margaret, Dominic’s aunt, began crying near the second row.
Someone whispered a prayer.
Elena kept her hand on the coffin.

The flag beneath her glove reminded her to stay standing.
