Chapter 13 - Richard’s Final BackupEmergency lights came on beneath the water.

Samuel guided Mara toward the ladder while the server chamber filled behind them.

Nathan had stabilized Vanessa’s transmitter by severing its connection to the vault scanner. She remained conscious, with Lillian pressing bandages against the incision near her collarbone.

“Did it work?” Vanessa asked.

“Not completely,” Mara said.

The trust showed no confirmed transfer.

Owen still held Richard’s master drive at the estate.

If he restored the family-retention command first, the fortune would remain under the system he controlled.

Federal agents prepared to return to the mainland.

Samuel stopped them.

“Richard built a second backup.”

“Where?” Mara asked.

“In the pacemaker archive.”

Richard’s implanted heart device had stored encrypted pieces of the trust code. He designed it so no legal transfer could be finalized without verifying that he was alive and consenting.

After his death, the system should have permanently frozen.

Instead, someone continued sending valid pacemaker signals.

Nathan opened the cardiac logs.

The device that failed inside Richard’s body had been removed before burial.

His coffin contained no implant.

A second pacemaker with the same identity continued transmitting from an unknown location.

Owen had been using it to imitate Richard’s authority.

But the newest signal did not come from Mara’s estate.

It came from the island.

They followed the transmission to the abandoned boathouse.

Inside a waterproof case beneath the dock, investigators found Richard’s original pacemaker attached to a biometric simulator.

Eleanor and Samuel had taken it after his death.

“Why?” Mara asked.

Samuel answered honestly.

“Eleanor did not trust you yet. She wanted the ability to stop Richard’s transfer plan.”

“Everyone kept one final weapon.”

“Yes.”

The pacemaker contained Richard’s last full recording.

He appeared exhausted, seated in Nathan’s underground bunker only hours before his death.

“I changed Mara’s legal identity to Eleanor Grant.”

Mara watched without blinking.

“I told myself it protected her from Owen. The truth is that I needed Eleanor’s authority and Mara’s trust. I used both sisters.”

Lillian closed her eyes.

Richard continued.

“I kept Lillian confined after learning she was alive because Owen threatened Vanessa. I told myself I was building a case. The truth is that I chose control over immediate rescue.”

Vanessa stared at her father’s image.

“I placed Vanessa with Owen’s therapist because I believed monitoring him would reveal his network. The truth is that I knowingly left my daughter near a predator.”

No one was spared.

Richard did not ask forgiveness.

He provided the final transfer key and directed all restitution authority to an independent public board selected by survivors.

The system could complete Eleanor’s plan.

But the recording contained one final condition.

“Before the transfer, Mara must hear the kitchen recording from the night I died.”

Nathan inserted the pacemaker into the island console.

The audio began.

Richard entered the kitchen and confronted Owen through a secure video call. He said he planned to expose everything the following morning.

Owen threatened Vanessa.

Richard replied that federal protection was already arranged.

Then another person entered the kitchen.

Mara heard her own voice.

“Richard, what have you done?”

She remembered finding him awake that night.

She remembered the white pill bottle.

But the recording continued beyond her memory.

Richard told her the truth about Lillian, Eleanor, and the identity switch.

Mara shouted that she would expose him herself.

Then Richard poured a sedative into her tea.

Mara stared at the screen.

“He drugged me.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“That is why you remembered only fragments.”

Richard carried her upstairs unconscious.

He returned to the kitchen.

A woman was waiting.

Her face remained outside the camera angle.

She used Lillian’s biometric profile to activate the pacemaker shutdown.

Richard recognized her.

“Eleanor?”

Mara stopped breathing.

Eleanor was supposed to have been dying elsewhere.

The woman replied:

“You should have left my sister out of this.”

Then Richard collapsed.

Samuel stared at the recording.

“I was with Eleanor that night.”

“Then who was in the kitchen?” Lillian asked.

The camera finally shifted.

The woman turned toward it.
