Eleanor became pregnant as a teenager while living under a protected identity. Her daughter, Lillian, was adopted through a private agency connected to the Vale family.
Richard met Lillian years later and married her without knowing who her biological mother was.
Or that was what he claimed.
When Eleanor disappeared, Richard gained access to files connecting Mara’s family to the stolen settlement network.
Years later, he encountered Mara at a charity investigation hearing.
The meeting had not been accidental.
Richard knew who she was.
“He chose me because of Eleanor,” Mara whispered.
“He believed you could help unlock her evidence.”
“He married me without telling me I was related to his first wife.”
“Yes.”
Mara turned her face away.
Richard’s secrecy had exposed her to Vanessa’s grief and rage while denying both women the truth that might have changed their relationship.
Vanessa arrived at the hospital under police escort.
She was not handcuffed. Investigators still had to determine whether Owen manipulated her, whether she acted independently, and how much of the allergy attack had been planned.
Mara watched her enter.
“You knew about the shrimp.”
“Yes.”
“You contaminated my handbag.”
“Yes.”
“You stole my injector.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa did not ask to be forgiven.
That prevented her remorse from becoming another demand.
“I believed Owen would release my mother’s location after you died.”
“Did he promise that?”
“He sent videos.”
“Of Lillian?”
“A woman in a hospital room calling my name.”
Nathan examined the recordings.
The face belonged to Lillian, but the audio had been edited from older family videos. The most recent clip showed her turning toward a window.
A local weather report reflected faintly in the glass.
The date was only four days earlier.
She was alive.
Mara asked Vanessa why she trusted Owen after the house began exposing him.
“Because I had trusted him longer than I remembered trusting anyone.”
The boarding-school sedation explained part of it. Owen had positioned himself as the only adult who believed Vanessa’s fear that Richard replaced her mother.
He then fed that fear for years.
Still, Vanessa made choices.
She obtained shrimp extract.
She planned the false reaction.
She watched Mara choke.
Manipulation did not erase responsibility.
“I do not know whether I will ever forgive you,” Mara said.
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
“But we both need the truth about Lillian.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Why would you help me?”
“Because she is my family too. And because helping find her does not cancel what you did.”
Nathan opened Richard’s cardiac data.
The pacemaker was disabled from inside the house, but the command required two approvals.
Owen supplied one.
The second came from Lillian’s biometric profile.
If Lillian lived in a controlled clinic, Owen may have forced her to authorize it.
Or someone had copied her biometrics years earlier.
The command record showed a short audio phrase.
Confirm Richard Vale emergency termination.
A woman answered:
“Yes.”
Vanessa recognized the voice.
Her mother.
Richard may have died because Lillian authorized the shutdown.
Mara saw the conclusion forming in Vanessa’s face.
“Do not decide based on one recording.”
“That is what you think I did to you.”
“Yes.”
The full audio continued.
Lillian said:
“Yes—terminate the emergency test and restore his pacemaker immediately.”
The command system had extracted only the first word.
Owen edited a refusal into consent.
Richard’s pacemaker remained disabled.
Nathan traced the original voice call to the Maine clinic.
Before police could request records, the facility’s administrator contacted the hospital.
The clinic denied ever treating Lillian Vale.
Then Mara’s cardiac monitor received a secure patient-to-patient message.
MARA, DO NOT LET VANESSA COME HERE. OWEN IS NOT THE ONLY PERSON WATCHING HER.
