Chapter 5 - The Boarding School VisitsVanessa claimed she did not remember meeting Owen at sixteen.

The photograph showed otherwise.
She stood beside him beneath the stone archway of St. Agnes Preparatory School. Owen’s hand rested lightly on her shoulder while she held a sealed envelope.
Nathan located the corresponding visitor logs.
Owen visited Vanessa twelve times during one school year under the name Oliver Marsh, listed as a family therapist.
Richard never authorized the sessions.
“What did he tell you?” Mara asked.
Vanessa pressed both hands against her temples.
“I had panic attacks after Mom died.”
“Lillian died when you were eight.”
“They came back at school.”
Owen had told Vanessa that Richard’s grief made him emotionally dangerous. He suggested that every woman her father loved would eventually replace Lillian and steal Vanessa’s future.
He gave her recordings of Richard arguing with employees, attorneys, and Mara.
Each clip ended before Richard explained what he was investigating.
Owen taught Vanessa to treat fragments as proof.
Nathan found medical records from the school infirmary. Vanessa received a sedative after every counseling session.
The drug could impair memory formation and increase suggestibility.
“You drugged me?” Vanessa whispered toward the porch camera.
Owen no longer answered.
Police had temporarily moved him away from the entrance while verifying the forged order.
He remained outside under legal protection because no arrest warrant had yet been issued.
Vanessa opened Richard’s archived message.
Her father appeared seated in his study three weeks before his death.
“I failed you after your mother disappeared.”
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“Disappeared?”
Richard did not say died.
The official story claimed Lillian fell overboard during a storm. Search teams found her coat and wedding ring but never recovered her body.
Richard had privately doubted the accident.
He discovered Lillian had been transferring money from the Vale trust into accounts managed by Owen. She planned to expose him during the sailing trip.
Owen was the last person who spoke with her from shore.
After her disappearance, he became Richard’s estate attorney.
“Why keep him?” Mara asked the recording.
Richard answered as though anticipating the question.
“Because keeping Owen close was the only way to find where he moved Lillian.”
Vanessa sank against the wall.
“My mother is alive?”
Nathan could not confirm it.
Richard’s files showed that someone using Lillian’s biometric banking profile accessed an account six months earlier. The transaction came from a private medical facility in Maine.
Owen had been paying that facility through shell companies.
Mara looked at Vanessa.
“He may have used your mother to control you.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You think this excuses you?”
“No.”
“You married Dad while knowing he was searching for her.”
“I knew he believed Lillian’s death was suspicious. I did not know he thought she was alive.”
“Then he lied to both of us.”
“Yes.”
The answer prevented Vanessa from turning Mara into another defender of Richard.
He had protected information so aggressively that he left both women vulnerable to the person he suspected.
The cardiac monitor beside Mara emitted another warning. Her blood pressure was dropping again.
Nathan adjusted the oxygen flow.
“You need hospital treatment.”
The front door remained sealed because the internal system detected active evidence destruction attempts.
Nathan entered his physician override.
The system demanded authorization from two family members.
Mara placed her hand on the console.
The second authorization had to come from Vanessa.
“Open the door,” Mara said.
Vanessa stared at her.
“You’ll tell police I tried to kill you.”
“I will tell the truth.”
“That means prison.”
“It may.”
“Then why would I help you?”
“Because if I die, Owen gets the exact story he prepared. You become the murderer, he becomes the trustee, and your mother remains wherever he put her.”
Vanessa looked toward the porch where Owen stood beneath police lights.
Then she pressed her palm against the console.
The front door unlocked.
Paramedics rushed inside.
As they lifted Mara onto a stretcher, Richard’s portrait activated one final time.
“Do not allow Mara to leave the property until she opens the blue ledger.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“There is no blue ledger in the archive.”
Vanessa looked toward the basement.
From behind the sealed lower door came three slow knocks.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
May you like
“Vanessa?”
👉 A voice resembling Lillian’s came from beneath the house even though Nathan insisted the bunker had been empty.
