Chapter 16 - THIRTY SECONDS

The countdown reached twenty-seven.
Mara heard breathing beside Vanessa.
Not from the video.
Inside the lower chamber.
Vanessa turned slowly toward the darkness.
A woman stepped into the narrow emergency light.
She had Mara’s face.
Not a surgical mask.
Not a digital projection.
Her hair was shorter and streaked with gray. A thin scar crossed her right temple. Her expression carried no surprise at being discovered.
Rebecca Mercer.
The real Rebecca.
Vanessa moved backward.
“You killed my father.”
Rebecca looked toward Richard’s living heartbeat on the screen.
“I stopped his pacemaker. I believed he died.”
“Believed?”
“Nathan’s emergency system restored him.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You knew the backup existed?”
“Richard showed me while trying to convince me he deserved one more chance.”
The countdown reached twenty-two.
Three identity profiles continued flashing:
MARA ELLISON.
ELEANOR GRANT.
REBECCA MERCER.
The house announced:
“Select biological identity for termination.”
Mara moved toward the mechanical console.
“What does termination mean?”
Rebecca answered.
“Legal erasure first. Medical erasure second.”
Every Vale-linked hospital, bank, trust, security system, and government record would mark the selected woman deceased. Devices authenticated through that identity would shut down. Accounts would move. Guardianships would change.
If the chosen profile carried an implanted cardiac device or active medical record, the command might also stop treatment.
Richard’s system had converted identity into life support.
Vanessa looked at Mara’s cardiac monitor.
“If it deletes Eleanor, does it shut off your implant?”
Nathan examined the signal.
“Mara’s monitor currently runs under Eleanor’s legal profile.”
The countdown reached seventeen.
Choosing Eleanor could kill Mara.
Choosing Mara could erase Rebecca’s active documents.
Choosing Rebecca could terminate the profile carried by the unidentified fourth woman beside Richard.
No selection protected everyone.
A woman’s voice came from the lower speaker.
“Select Mara Ellison.”
Richard looked toward someone outside his hospital camera.
“Clara, stop.”
The woman with Mara’s face entered his frame fully.
She was older than the triplets by minutes, not years.
Same eyes.
Same chin.
Different scar.
“The countdown cannot be stopped,” she said.
Mara looked at Rebecca.
“Who is Clara?”
Rebecca’s answer came quietly.
“Our sister.”
The birth records had been altered again.
Evelyn Ellison delivered four daughters during an emergency procedure. Three appeared in the blue ledger because three identities were useful to Alexander Vale.
A fourth infant was removed before civil registration.
She became Clara Ellison privately and carried Rebecca’s unused birth identity publicly.
The supposed triplets were quadruplets.
Eleanor died.
Mara lived under Eleanor’s name.
Rebecca carried Mara’s profile.
Clara carried Rebecca’s original birth record.
The system recognized three names across three living bodies and demanded one contradiction be eliminated.
Clara had initiated the countdown.
She believed deleting Mara’s original identity would leave Mara alive under Eleanor, Rebecca alive under Mara, and Clara legally confirmed as Rebecca.
The founder reserve would then open for her.
“You brought us together to complete the identity rotation,” Mara said.
“I brought you together because Richard’s system will otherwise remain active after all of us die.”
“You could have explained.”
“Owen controlled every communication channel.”
“You spoke through Vanessa’s phone.”
“Because the house needed all profiles physically present.”
The countdown reached ten.
Vanessa lifted Richard’s missing mechanical key.
“Owen gave me this so I would open the chamber after Mara died.”
Rebecca moved toward her.
“Do not put it into the identity console.”
“Why?”
“Because it finalizes the selected deletion.”
Vanessa looked at the three evidence cases.
Eleanor’s contained recordings.
Mara’s contained the pacemaker monitor and infant bracelet.
Rebecca’s was empty.
Mara understood.
“The empty case is not missing evidence.”
Rebecca followed her gaze.
“It is the physical override.”
Mara pulled the empty case from its frame.
A metal plate appeared beneath it.
Not three identity buttons.
One switch.
TERMINATE BIOLOGICAL AUTHORITY.
Richard had created a fourth option and hidden it beneath the profile the family believed least important.
The system could erase one sister.
Or erase the rule allowing biology to command the system.
The countdown reached five.
Clara shouted through the screen:
“If you use that switch before the reserve opens, evidence connected to thousands of victims may lock permanently.”
Mara placed her hand above it.
“Then we preserve what investigators already have and recover the rest without sacrificing a person.”
“You cannot know what will be lost.”
“You could not know who would die.”
Three.
Richard raised his hand weakly.
“Mara, use it.”
Two.
Vanessa inserted the mechanical key beside the switch.
The cover released.
One.
Mara pressed down.
Every identity profile disappeared.
The countdown stopped.
The house lights returned.
Mara’s cardiac monitor continued functioning locally.
Rebecca remained standing.
Clara remained visible beside Richard.
No person vanished.
Across the screen appeared a new message:
BIOLOGICAL COMMAND REVOKED.
FOUNDER RESERVE FROZEN PENDING JUDICIAL REVIEW.
Clara closed her eyes.
Decades of planning had failed.
Richard looked directly at Mara.
“You did what I should have done before marrying you.”
She did not accept the statement as praise.
“You built the choice.”
“Yes.”
From another screen, Owen appeared beside the woman wearing Rebecca’s face.
Federal facial analysis identified her as Dr. Celia Ward, a reconstructive surgeon connected to the Vale medical network.
She had altered her appearance, fingerprints, and biometric patterns to approximate Rebecca.
Owen had expected the system to recognize Celia long enough to open the reserve after the real sisters were erased.
The copied face had never been about deception alone.
It was a replacement identity prepared to inherit whatever remained.
Owen reached toward the remote console.
Nothing responded.
Vanessa’s transmitter had been disconnected.
Richard’s pacemaker authority had been frozen.
The Ellison biological chain no longer controlled the house.
For the first time, Owen possessed files, lawyers, and money—
May you like
but no human body he could use as a key.
👉 Mara stopped the countdown by terminating biological authority itself, but Richard, Clara, Rebecca, and Nathan still had to explain how a dead man had remained alive beneath eleven months of lies.
