Chapter 9 - The Island Richard Purchased TwiceRichard bought Blackthorn Island six months before marrying Lillian.

After her disappearance, he sold it to an offshore company.

The blue ledger revealed that he secretly repurchased the property through another trust five years later.

The island was not merely the site of an accident.

It contained an underground records vault built by Richard’s father.

Mara, Vanessa, Nathan, and federal investigators traveled by secured helicopter. No one trusted the charter manifest enough to assume Lillian or Eleanor would be waiting.

The main house stood abandoned.

Dust covered the furniture, but the power system remained active.

A photograph of Richard and Lillian hung above the fireplace. Someone had cut Richard’s face from the frame.

Vanessa touched the photograph carefully.

“I don’t remember this place.”

“You were here once,” Nathan said. “The summer before the accident.”

“Dad told me I stayed with Grandma.”

“Your memories may have been altered by the same sedatives Owen used later.”

The island’s security archive contained footage of eight-year-old Vanessa running along the dock while Lillian argued with Owen.

Richard stood nearby.

Samuel Pierce recorded the exchange.

Lillian shouted:

“The trust belongs to the families your father robbed.”

Richard answered:

“I am trying to separate legitimate assets from stolen ones.”

“You have been trying for years.”

Owen interrupted.

“If this becomes public, Vanessa loses everything.”

Lillian looked toward her daughter.

That threat silenced her.

Owen had used the child before he ever manipulated the adult she became.

The final footage from the sailing night showed Lillian boarding a small boat with Samuel.

Richard remained on the dock.

Owen entered the boat at the last moment.

The camera feed cut before departure.

Only Owen returned.

He claimed a storm struck suddenly.

Weather records showed calm water.

Inside the underground vault, investigators found the missing boat preserved behind a hydraulic door.

Its railing carried dried blood.

DNA testing identified Lillian and Samuel.

No body evidence appeared.

A medical kit inside contained sedatives from the Maine clinic.

Owen had likely drugged both passengers and staged the disappearance.

But why keep Lillian alive for fifteen years?

The vault ledger explained.

Lillian held legal title to half the assets stolen by Richard’s father. Her biometric approval was required to transfer them into restitution accounts.

Owen kept her alive because he needed her identity.

The same reason he kept Vanessa close.

The estate trust did not pass simply to Vanessa when Mara died. It required verification from Lillian’s living line.

Owen’s plan was to use Vanessa as emotional leverage over Lillian, force both approvals, then erase the women once the money moved.

Mara’s death would remove the only independent trustee capable of challenging him.

A sound came from the upper level.

Footsteps.

Investigators surrounded the vault entrance.

A woman entered wearing a gray coat.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

The woman looked like the older version of Lillian’s photographs.

She did not approach Vanessa.

“Do not come closer.”

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“It’s me.”

“I know.”

“Why won’t you touch me?”

Lillian looked toward Mara.

“Because Owen placed a transmitter inside Vanessa when she was sixteen.”

Nathan scanned her with a handheld detector.

A faint signal came from beneath Vanessa’s left collarbone.

She believed it was an old surgical screw from a riding accident.

It was a biometric relay.

Owen had been tracking her and using her body to authenticate remote trust commands.

Vanessa’s presence on the island had just opened the final vault.

The steel floor beneath them began descending.

👉 Owen never needed to reach the island himself—Vanessa had unknowingly carried the key inside her body.
