Chapter 8 - The Clinic Without PatientsFederal investigators entered the Maine clinic the following morning.

The facility stood beside a frozen lake behind high stone walls. Public records described it as an elite neurological rehabilitation center.

Most rooms were empty.

Medical beds remained warm.

Computers had been stripped from the offices.

Someone evacuated the patients hours before the search.

Investigators found one room decorated with photographs of Vanessa from infancy through adulthood.

Lillian’s clothing hung inside the wardrobe.

A camera pointed toward the bed.

The wallpaper behind it matched Vanessa’s recent videos.

Lillian had been held there.

Her medical chart listed dissociative amnesia, paranoia, and dangerous fixation on Richard Vale.

The diagnosis had been signed by Dr. Owen Mercer.

Owen was not a physician.

Yet his signature appeared beneath a medical license number belonging to his deceased older brother.

He had created authority whenever he needed it.

A nurse agreed to speak privately.

Lillian arrived fifteen years earlier under court order after the sailing accident. She had survived, but Owen told staff she attempted to kill Richard and Vanessa.

For years, Lillian insisted Owen sabotaged the boat.

The clinic classified the accusation as delusional.

“She tried to contact her daughter,” the nurse said.

“Why didn’t anyone allow it?”

“Owen produced guardianship documents.”

“Did Richard know?”

“He visited twice.”

Vanessa heard this through the secure call.

“My father saw her?”

“Yes.”

Richard visited when Vanessa was ten and again when she was seventeen.

After the second visit, Lillian stopped asking to leave for several months.

Vanessa’s grief became fury.

“He knew she was alive and left her there.”

Nathan opened Richard’s private recordings from those dates.

During the first visit, Richard believed Lillian’s memories were unreliable because of a head injury. Owen warned that removing her would endanger Vanessa.

During the second, Lillian gave Richard the location of the blue ledger and accused Owen of controlling the clinic.

Richard promised to return with investigators.

He did not.

Three days later, Vanessa began her sedated counseling sessions with Owen.

Owen threatened to release videos portraying Lillian as violent if Richard exposed the clinic.

Richard chose secrecy.

Again.

He began building the house protocol and collecting evidence, but he left Lillian confined while he searched for a perfect legal route.

No perfect route came.

He died first.

Mara closed the recording.

“Richard’s fear explains him. It does not excuse fifteen years.”

Vanessa looked at her with surprise.

She had expected Mara to defend him.

Mara no longer intended to protect the dead from consequences.

The clinic’s security log showed Lillian was removed six hours before the search.

The transport order carried Nathan’s signature.

He stared at it.

“I did not sign this.”

The biometric verification came from the underground bunker beneath Richard’s house. Someone had entered it while Nathan accompanied Mara to the hospital.

Officer Price reviewed the kitchen footage.

After Vanessa opened the front door for paramedics, a masked figure slipped through the basement entrance from an exterior service tunnel.

The intruder copied Nathan’s medical key and left before police searched the lower level.

The figure wore a Vale security uniform discontinued ten years earlier.

Richard’s private head of security, Samuel Pierce, had worn that uniform.

Samuel disappeared after Lillian’s sailing accident.

His body was never found.

Nathan opened another file.

Samuel was Eleanor’s last known partner.

If alive, he might be Mara’s missing sister’s accomplice, Lillian’s biological father, or both.

The Maine clinic’s transport vehicle stopped at an airfield owned by Pierce Protective Services.

A charter plane departed before federal agents arrived.

Passenger manifest:

Lillian Vale.

Samuel Pierce.

And Eleanor Grant.

Mara stared at her sister’s name.

“Eleanor is alive too?”

The manifest may have been false.

But three women from the same erased family line were now connected to one flight.

Its destination was the private island where Lillian’s sailing accident occurred.

👉 The search for Vanessa’s mother led back to the place she supposedly died—and the records claimed Mara’s missing sister was traveling with her.
