Chapter 10 - Beneath HawthorneState police surrounded Hawthorne Maternal Services before dawn.

The clinic’s administrator denied the existence of a lower level.

Ground-penetrating scans revealed an underground structure extending beneath the parking area.

The only elevator required Robert Carrington’s founder credential.

Adrian controlled it remotely.

Olivia obtained authority to cut power and open the shaft manually.

Adrian responded by shutting down ventilation below.

Dr. Keller monitored the system through emergency engineering feeds.

“If Thomas is medically fragile, we cannot wait.”

Ethan stood beside the elevator team.

Emma had been ordered to remain in the hospital.

She refused again.

“This is my father.”

“You are eight months pregnant,” Ethan said.

“And every decision about my life has been made in rooms I wasn’t allowed to enter.”

He could not argue with that.

She remained inside the command vehicle with Dr. Keller while officers breached the lower level.

The first chamber contained medical beds, archived records, and personal belongings from people declared dead through Carrington-connected cases.

A woman whose family believed she drowned.

A former accountant listed as missing.

A county assessor declared incompetent after challenging a land transfer.

Hawthorne was not only a maternity clinic.

It was a private confinement center.

Thomas occupied the final room.

He was conscious but weak.

Dr. Keller entered with the medical team.

Emma followed after the level was secured.

For the first time in twenty years, father and daughter saw each other.

Thomas stared at her belly.

“You grew up.”

Emma knelt beside the bed.

“They told me you died.”

“I let them.”

The words stopped her tears.

“You chose this?”

“At first.”

Thomas explained.

Before the plane crash, he discovered Margaret and Adrian—then still a teenager—moving money from the Bell-Carrington reserve.

Robert begged him not to expose Adrian publicly.

Thomas agreed to disappear temporarily while federal investigators built a case.

The plane crash was staged.

Robert promised Emma would be told within months.

Then Victor Sloan intercepted Thomas’s protected identity and moved him to a private Carrington property.

Robert believed Thomas fled with the money.

Thomas believed Robert betrayed him.

Margaret used their distrust to keep both men separated.

“Why didn’t you escape?” Emma asked.

“I did. Twice.”

The first time, he reached a lawyer who returned him to Victor.

The second time, he contacted Robert shortly before Robert’s death.

They discovered Margaret had manipulated both sides.

Together, they planned to expose her.

Then Robert suffered his fatal medical crisis.

Thomas was moved to Hawthorne and kept under guardianship based on fabricated cognitive assessments.

Adrian later took control of the facility.

“You built a trust that depends on my child,” Emma said.

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I thought a future grandchild would force the two families to preserve the partnership rather than destroy each other.”

“You made a baby into a corporate lock.”

“Yes.”

“Margaret made that lock into a weapon.”

“Yes.”

Thomas did not defend the design.

He admitted it had been wrong from the beginning.

Police searched the underground archive.

They found original deeds, Robert’s medical records, and internal recordings proving Victor and Dr. Voss falsified competency reports.

But Adrian was gone.

A service tunnel led from Hawthorne to an unfinished office complex half a mile away.

Margaret’s coat lay inside the tunnel.

Blood marked one sleeve.

No body.

No confirmation she had escaped.

Thomas asked about Ethan.

When Ethan entered, the older man stared at him.

“You look like Adrian.”

“They’re twins,” Emma said.

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

The laboratory evidence was conclusive.

Yet Thomas insisted Robert had once shown him the original birth records.

Adrian and Ethan were not twins.

Adrian was not Margaret’s biological son.

He was Thomas Bell’s son.

Emma stepped away from the bed.

“That would make him my brother.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Your half-brother.”

Margaret had claimed Adrian as a Carrington child to hide an affair that could have destroyed both families.

But if Adrian was Thomas’s son, the genetic closeness between Adrian and Emma’s baby made sense through the Bell line as well as the Carrington line.

Ethan’s genetic identity remained unresolved.

Thomas looked at him.

“Robert told you that you were his son.”

“He was.”

“Robert was sterile after a military injury.”

The room went silent.

If Robert could not father Ethan, then Ethan’s biological father was someone else.

And whoever it was had produced genetics nearly identical to Adrian’s.

👉 Thomas’s rescue exposed Adrian as Emma’s half-brother—and left Ethan’s true parentage buried inside the same family fraud.
