Chapter 12 - The Room Behind the MarbleThe hidden door opened beneath the staircase landing.

Inside was a narrow room built between the foyer walls.
It contained a bed, a desk, surveillance screens, and a second entrance leading to the old servant corridor.
Margaret sat in the chair with one wrist tied.
She was alive.
Adrian was gone.
Police released her and requested medical attention.
Margaret refused until Ethan entered.
He stood in the doorway with Emma beside him.
For the first time, Margaret looked at Emma without contempt.
She looked afraid.
“Is the baby safe?”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“You lost the right to ask.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
Ethan held up the phone.
“Am I adopted?”
“Yes.”
“Who was Rosa Cole?”
“Your biological mother.”
“Why did she give me to you?”
“She died.”
“Who was my father?”
Margaret looked toward the security monitors.
“Robert’s younger brother, Samuel.”
The Carrington family believed Samuel died during military service overseas.
He had fathered Ethan with Rosa shortly before deployment.
Robert and Margaret adopted the baby because Samuel never returned and Rosa died from complications after childbirth.
The adoption was not shameful.
The secrecy was.
Robert wanted Ethan raised openly as his nephew and legal son.
Margaret feared Adrian would lose firstborn status if another Carrington male entered the household.
She created conflicting records to keep control over both boys.
“Was Adrian your son?” Ethan asked.
Margaret’s face tightened.
“No.”
Thomas’s affair with a woman named Rebecca Lane produced Adrian. Rebecca died when he was an infant. Thomas planned to acknowledge him privately.
Margaret learned about the child and offered to raise him inside the Carrington household. She told Robert Adrian was hers from a previous relationship.
Thomas agreed because he believed his marriage and business would collapse if the truth emerged.
Every adult participated in the lie for a different reason.
Adrian grew up feeling misplaced because he was.
“Why fake his death?” Emma asked.
“He tried to expose the partnership fraud,” Margaret said.
“You told everyone he committed it.”
“He did commit some of it. Victor taught him to move money. When Robert threatened prosecution, Adrian threatened to reveal every birth record.”
“So you erased him.”
“I sent him away.”
“You held him in private facilities.”
“To protect Ethan.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You keep using that word.”
Margaret began crying.
“I loved you.”
“You pressed your foot against my pregnant wife.”
“I thought she was taking you from me.”
“She was asking me to become a husband.”
Margaret looked toward Emma.
“I wanted her frightened enough to sign. I never wanted the baby harmed.”
Emma touched her belly.
“You do not get credit for the limit you placed on your cruelty.”
Police searched the room.
The surveillance monitors showed every camera in Ravenswood.
Margaret had watched Emma constantly.
Another monitor displayed a live image from the hospital.
Thomas lay asleep under guard.
A man in medical scrubs entered his room carrying a syringe.
Margaret stood.
“That’s Adrian.”
Ethan called hospital security.
The guard outside Thomas’s room stopped the man before he reached the bed.
Adrian escaped through the stairwell.
The syringe contained no poison.
It carried a sedative and a tracking capsule.
Adrian wanted Thomas alive but movable.
He still needed his father’s biometric signature to control the Bell side of the trust.
Margaret revealed Adrian’s next move.
“He has the original Founder’s Blood charter.”
“Where?”
“At Carrington headquarters.”
The company’s annual board meeting had been moved forward.
Adrian planned to present himself publicly as Thomas Bell’s hidden son and Robert Carrington’s legal heir.
He would ask the board to remove Ethan before the emergency identity hearing.
If the board recognized him first, the trust court might follow.
Ethan looked toward the front door.
Margaret caught his arm.
“Do not go.”
“Why?”
“Because he built the boardroom presentation around your anger.”
“He expects me to attack him.”
“He expects cameras.”
Margaret had trained Ethan to react through guilt.
Adrian intended to train him through rage.
Emma stepped between them.
“Then Ethan does not go alone.”
Margaret looked at her.
“You should stay safe.”
Emma’s eyes filled with cold disbelief.
“You do not decide where I kneel, where I give birth, or where I stand.”
They entered Carrington headquarters with Olivia, investigators, and independent medical support.
The boardroom doors were already open.
Adrian stood at the head of the table.
Behind him, a screen displayed Ethan’s adoption files.
Beside the files was a live account balance.
The forty-two-million-dollar Founder’s Blood transfer had been moved again.
Recipient:
Emma Bell Carrington.
Emma stared.
“I never received that.”
Adrian smiled.
“No. But your biometric signature approved it.”
The transfer transformed Emma from victim into apparent participant.

If regulators believed she conspired with Adrian, she could lose control of the Bell trust before the baby was born.
👉 Adrian had moved the stolen fortune into Emma’s name, turning the woman Margaret abused into the perfect financial suspect.
