Chapter 15 - The Declaration Before BirthEmma returned to the hospital under guard.

The stress had triggered contractions.

Dr. Keller stopped the early labor for the moment, but he warned that the baby might arrive before the legal disputes were resolved.

Ethan remained beside her.

The original Founder’s Blood charter lay inside a sealed evidence case across the room.

Olivia had sent certified copies to three courts, the bank auditor, and state investigators.

No single person could erase it now.

Margaret was recovered from Carrington headquarters alive.

She refused to explain how Adrian entered the secured floor.

She only said Rebecca’s twin, Rachel Lane, had worked beside Victor Sloan since Thomas’s disappearance.

Rebecca believed Rachel died on the plane.

Thomas believed Rebecca died after childbirth.

Margaret believed both women had disappeared permanently.

Victor had spent decades keeping every witness separated through contradictory deaths.

He was not merely the family lawyer.

He was the architect of the legal identities.

Adrian controlled the founder credential.

Victor controlled the records that decided whose identity survived.

Police searched for both men.

No final arrest occurred.

Judge Sloan continued challenging warrants.

The board still refused to recognize Ethan or Adrian permanently.

The Bell-Carrington assets remained frozen.

Ravenswood Mansion was placed under temporary preservation, with Emma recognized as beneficial owner but not yet granted full possession.

Nothing had reached an ending.

Emma lay beneath the examination light while Ethan held her hand.

“I kept thinking that once we found the truth, we would know what to do,” she said.

“And now?”

“Every truth opens another room.”

Ethan touched her bruised wrist.

“We don’t have to solve the whole family tonight.”

“We have to protect our child tonight.”

Dr. Keller entered carrying an updated report.

The baby remained stable.

But someone had attempted to alter the electronic birth plan again.

This time, the request did not come from Margaret, Adrian, Victor, or Hawthorne.

It came from the Bell-Carrington Reserve’s independent auditor, Miriam Cole.

Olivia called Miriam.

Her office was empty.

Her phone had been disconnected.

The amended plan instructed staff to collect the baby’s blood immediately after delivery and send it to a laboratory in Virginia.

The receiving account belonged to Samuel Carrington—Ethan’s supposed biological father.

Samuel had been declared dead overseas thirty-six years earlier.

Another dead man had an active account.

Ethan opened Robert’s old journal.

One final page had been sealed beneath the binding.

Robert wrote:

Samuel returned before Ethan’s fifth birthday. Margaret refused to let him claim the child. Victor arranged another death. If Samuel is alive, he possesses the only original record proving whether Ethan is a Carrington heir or a substitute placed inside the family.

Emma stared at her husband.

“A substitute for whom?”

The hospital lights flickered.

Security reported a power fault at the nurses’ station.

Ethan moved toward the door.

Emma caught his hand.

“Don’t leave.”

He stayed.

A phone began ringing inside the evidence case.

No phone had been placed there.

Olivia opened the case under police observation.

A small black device had been hidden inside the charter’s leather cover.

Ethan answered on speaker.

An older man appeared by video.

He had Ethan’s eyes.

Behind him stood Adrian, Victor Sloan, and Rachel Lane.

The older man spoke first.

“My name is Samuel Carrington.”

Ethan could barely breathe.

“You’re my father?”

Samuel looked at Emma.

“That depends on which child Margaret brought home.”

The screen divided.

A second hospital room appeared.

Another pregnant woman lay in a bed surrounded by Carrington security.

She looked terrified.

On the wall behind her was a Bell-Carrington birth declaration.

Her name was Grace Cole.

Ethan recognized the surname of his biological mother.

Samuel continued.

“Emma’s baby is not the only child capable of activating the trust.”

Grace was pregnant with another Carrington-line heir.

Adrian had never needed to win Emma’s baby if he could produce a competing child first.

Emma gripped Ethan’s hand.

“When is she due?”

Samuel answered:

“Tonight.”

Adrian stepped toward the camera.

“Your child can inherit the truth, Ethan. Or mine can inherit the company.”

A cry sounded from the second room as Grace’s labor intensified.

Victor placed a declaration form beside her.

Then the security monitor outside Emma’s room flashed.

Margaret stood in the hospital hallway holding the metal basin from Ravenswood’s foyer.

No officer had escorted her there.

She stared through the glass at Emma’s bed.

In the basin, beneath steaming ginger water, lay Robert Carrington’s original founder seal.

Margaret raised it toward the camera.

“I know which baby they switched.”

The call disconnected.

Hospital alarms began sounding from both maternity rooms.

And Emma’s contractions returned harder than before.
