Chapter 16 - THE TWO WOMEN IN LABOREmma’s contractions came less than three minutes apart.

Dr. Mason Keller closed the tablet displaying Samuel Carrington’s face and moved to the side of the bed.

“The legal conflict stops here,” he said. “Emma is my patient. Her child is my patient. No declaration, signature, blood collection, or trust instruction occurs unless medically necessary and currently authorized.”

The screen still showed Grace Cole twisting beneath white sheets in the second maternity room.

Victor Sloan placed a document beside her hand.

Adrian stood near the camera.

Samuel watched both rooms as though simultaneous births were pieces moving across one board.

Margaret remained outside Emma’s glass door holding the metal basin filled with steaming ginger water. Robert Carrington’s founder seal lay beneath the surface.

A police officer approached her.

“Put the basin down.”

“If the seal leaves the water before the declaration system is isolated, Adrian can activate it remotely.”

Olivia Grant stepped into the corridor.

“Why is it in water?”

“Robert designed the seal to detect temperature and pressure. Victor could copy its image, but not its current physical response.”

Margaret looked through the glass at Emma.

“I know what happened in the nursery.”

Emma pressed one hand beneath her belly.

“You will tell Olivia. You will not come near me.”

Margaret’s face tightened, but she nodded.

Ethan remained beside the bed.

The older Samuel on the screen had his eyes. That resemblance no longer felt like proof of family. Too many adults had used faces, blood, signatures, and familiar names as authority.

“Where is Grace?” Ethan asked.

Samuel answered:

“In a place Hawthorne cannot reach.”

“Victor is standing beside her.”

“Victor brought us the original identity records.”

“He created the false identities.”

“He preserved them after Margaret began switching children.”

Margaret raised her voice from the corridor.

“Samuel, you watched him do it.”

For the first time, Samuel’s expression cracked.

Margaret turned toward Olivia.

Thirty-six years earlier, two women had delivered children within eleven days.

Margaret had given birth to a boy fathered by Samuel Carrington during a secret relationship that began while Robert was frequently away.

Rebecca Lane had delivered Adrian, Thomas Bell’s son.

Rosa Cole—Robert’s executive assistant—had delivered a daughter fathered by Samuel.

Three newborns connected both business families through affairs no adult wanted made public.

Margaret feared that her son would be removed if Robert learned Samuel was the father. Thomas feared Adrian would expose his relationship with Rebecca. Samuel feared losing both of his children after being ordered overseas.

Victor created the solution.

He altered every birth.

Adrian became Margaret’s supposed older son through a fabricated prior relationship.

Margaret’s biological baby was registered temporarily as Rosa Cole’s son, Ethan Cole, before being adopted into the Carrington family years later under reconstructed records.

Rosa’s daughter disappeared into a private maternal residence.

Her name was Grace Cole.

Ethan stared at Margaret.

“So I am your biological son.”

“Yes.”

“And Samuel is my father.”

“Yes.”

“You told me Rosa was my mother.”

“I needed you to believe your identity could not threaten Adrian’s.”

“You needed both of us uncertain enough to control.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

Samuel’s face remained on the monitor.

He had returned before Ethan’s fifth birthday and demanded both children. Victor arranged another military death after Samuel threatened the family partnership.

Samuel survived the disappearance.

Over time, he recovered Grace.

Instead of revealing her identity, he raised her inside a private Carrington program, telling her that public recognition would place her beneath Emma’s future child.

Grace had grown up knowing Samuel as her father.

She had never known Ethan existed as her half-brother.

Emma looked toward the second room.

“Is Grace pregnant with Adrian’s child?”

Samuel did not answer.

Adrian did.

“Yes.”

Ethan moved toward the monitor.

Emma caught his wrist.

“Stay.”

He stopped.

Adrian smiled.

“You always did need someone to tell you which family to choose.”

Ethan turned away from him and looked at Emma.

“There is no choice. I am staying with my wife.”

The sentence did not make Grace less urgent. It prevented Adrian from using one endangered woman to remove Ethan from another.

Olivia contacted state investigators monitoring the call. The second room’s digital background contained a clock used only inside the old Carrington Women’s Pavilion, a hospital Robert had closed twenty-two years earlier.

Police were already moving.

Victor forced a pen into Grace’s hand.

“Sign the free maternal declaration.”

Grace pushed the document away.

“I am not free.”

The sentence entered every recording.

Under the original charter, an attempt to force a maternal declaration permanently dissolved family succession.

Adrian’s face changed.

He had believed the coercion clause applied only to Emma.

Rebecca’s charter showed otherwise.

Any woman carrying a qualifying joint-family child possessed the same protection.

Grace’s refusal triggered a second dissolution condition.

Samuel stepped between Victor and the bed.

“That was not our agreement.”

Victor laughed.

“You believed I spent thirty-six years rebuilding these records so your children could choose?”

He reached for a syringe.

Grace screamed.

The second-room camera shook as Samuel struck Victor’s arm.

Adrian pulled Samuel backward.

Rachel Lane moved toward the door and entered a security code.

The lock remained closed.

Miriam Cole appeared from behind the camera.

Her hands were bound, but she had freed one wrist.

She pressed the emergency alarm.

Miriam was Rosa’s younger sister and Grace’s legal aunt. She had served as reserve auditor to keep one independent position near the trust.

Victor had abducted her and used her credentials to alter Emma’s birth plan.

The Virginia blood laboratory belonged to Samuel because Miriam had once created an independent account there to verify Grace’s identity.

Victor converted that safeguard into another collection order.

The camera feed failed as officers entered the old pavilion.

At Franklin Regional, Emma’s fetal monitor slowed.

Dr. Keller looked toward her.

“We need to deliver.”

Emma signed one visible surgical consent.

No trust page followed.

No Margaret.

No Samuel.

No founder seal.

Ethan kissed her forehead after asking permission.

“I will be here when you wake.”

“You had better be.”

Emma was taken toward surgery.

Across the state, Grace’s cries echoed through officers’ body cameras as another medical team entered her room.

Two women went into emergency delivery under independent care.

The Bell-Carrington system attempted to assign one child victory and the other defeat.
