Chapter 14 - The Woman Margaret ReplacedRebecca requested a meeting at an old Bell warehouse outside Franklin.
Olivia insisted on police protection.
Rebecca refused to enter a station or courthouse, claiming Victor Sloan controlled the records before witnesses finished speaking.
She agreed to meet Emma, Ethan, and Olivia inside the warehouse while officers secured the perimeter.
Margaret demanded to come.
Rebecca had accused her of stealing a child.
“You will stay here,” Ethan said.
“I raised Adrian.”
“You also erased his mother.”
Margaret looked at Emma.
“Do not trust Rebecca.”
Emma answered, “I don’t trust anyone who tells me trust must come before evidence.”
At the warehouse, Rebecca waited beside a metal table covered with documents.
She was in her early sixties, with Adrian’s eyes and Thomas’s rigid posture.
Emma had seen that face in childhood albums but never knew the woman’s name.
Rebecca began without greeting.
“Thomas loved me. He also loved his reputation more.”
Thomas had offered financial support but refused public acknowledgment of Adrian.
Margaret approached Rebecca after the baby was born.
She promised Adrian a secure home inside the Carrington family.
Rebecca agreed temporarily while recovering from a severe illness.
Margaret then used Victor to declare Rebecca unstable and dead.
“They told Thomas I abandoned the child,” Rebecca said.
“They told me Thomas demanded I disappear.”
“Where were you?”
“Private clinics. Religious residences. A family-protection program funded by Carrington Properties.”
Hawthorne was only the newest version.
Robert eventually discovered Rebecca was alive. He helped her escape under another name but refused to reunite her with Adrian, fearing the scandal would destroy both families.
Rebecca spent years collecting evidence.
She also contacted Adrian after his staged boating death.
“I thought he was a victim,” she said.
“He was,” Emma replied. “Then he became one of them.”
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
She gave Adrian money, documents, and access to Thomas’s old office.
She helped him restore Robert’s founder credential.
Her goal was to expose Margaret and reclaim her son.
Adrian’s goal became control.
“He told me Emma’s baby would end the false family structure,” Rebecca said. “I believed him.”
“You helped fund Hawthorne?”
“I funded his legal investigation. I did not know about Emma’s confinement plan until last week.”
Again, another adult claimed ignorance after supplying the machine.
Rebecca placed the original Founder’s Blood charter on the table.
It contained one final clause missing from every copy Olivia had seen.
The first biological grandchild did not automatically activate the trust.
The child’s mother had to make a free, witnessed declaration after birth.
Any attempt to coerce her before delivery permanently dissolved the family succession and transferred the assets into a public-benefit trust.
Margaret’s foyer assault had already triggered the dissolution condition—if the recording remained admissible.
Adrian’s entire empire could vanish.
“So why does he still want the baby?” Ethan asked.
“Because there is an alternate declaration.”
Rebecca opened another page.
If Emma died or became incapable before speaking, the child’s biological father could make the declaration.
Ethan stepped back.
Adrian did not need to prove he was the father.
He needed to eliminate Ethan’s legal identity, become the recognized Carrington representative, and control the child through court guardianship.
The plan had always placed Emma’s survival behind the fortune.
Rebecca handed over the original charter.
Then the warehouse lights failed.
Police radios outside went silent.
A vehicle struck the loading door.
Adrian entered with Victor Sloan and two private security men.
He looked at Rebecca.
“You promised not to involve Emma.”
“You promised no one would touch her.”
“She is the reason Father’s money still belongs to people who hated me.”
Emma stood behind Ethan.
“No. Your choices are the reason you will never control it.”
Adrian raised a phone.
A live video showed Margaret inside Carrington headquarters.
She sat beside an open window with her hands tied.
Below her was a twelve-story drop.
Adrian looked toward Ethan.
“Bring me the original charter.”
Rebecca clutched it.
Ethan said, “Release Mother.”
Adrian smiled.
“You still call her that after everything?”
“She raised me.”
“She manufactured you.”
The warehouse officers breached the side entrance.
Victor fled through the rear.
Adrian disappeared into a service corridor before police reached him.
The live video remained active.
Margaret looked toward the camera.
Then another woman entered the room behind her.
She had Rebecca’s face.
Rebecca was standing beside Emma in the warehouse.
The woman at headquarters was someone else.
Margaret whispered:
“Ethan, there were two Lane sisters.”
The second woman cut the video.
Rebecca stared at the black screen.
“My twin died with Thomas’s plane.”
The security feed from Carrington headquarters showed the woman leaving with Adrian.
She carried Margaret’s records and Robert’s founder device.
