PART 1

“He came home from military duty thinking his wife had stopped loving him… then he lifted the blanket and saw what his own family had done.”

Alejandro Reyes came home from six months of military duty with one fear in his chest.

Not death.

Not nightmares.

Not the silence that followed him from the desert to the airport.

He feared Elena no longer loved him.

For three months, her messages had become short.

Then cold.

Then almost gone.

His mother, Carmen, said Elena was “adjusting poorly.”

His younger brother, Ricardo, said she had been seen with lawyers.

Then came the message that broke him.

Maybe we should talk about separation when you return.

Alejandro read it in a barracks hallway with dust on his boots and a medal he no longer cared about.

So when he opened their bedroom door that night and saw Elena lying under the white blanket in a pink nightdress, he expected distance.

He expected anger.

He expected the end of a marriage.

He did not expect fear.

Elena turned her face away as soon as he stepped inside.

Her body went rigid.

Alejandro froze.

“Elena?”

She did not answer.

He moved closer slowly, the way soldiers approach a wounded survivor.

Not a stranger.

His wife.

The woman who used to fall asleep with her hand tucked inside his.

“Elena, it’s me.”

She began to cry.

Not softly.

Not dramatically.

Silently.

Like someone who had learned crying too loudly made things worse.

Alejandro sat on the edge of the bed.

She flinched.

That flinch destroyed him.

His hand hovered above the blanket.

“Baby…”

“What happened while I was gone?”

Elena shook her head.

The blanket slipped slightly from her knee.

Alejandro saw the first bruise.

Then another.

Then his hands moved before his mind could stop them.

He lifted the blanket.

His breath left him.

Her arms were covered in dark marks.

Her thighs were bruised.

One ankle was swollen.

Finger-shaped shadows circled both wrists.

Alejandro stared at her body like the room had vanished around him.

“Elena…”

His voice broke.

“Who did this to you?”

Elena curled toward the pillow, shaking.

Then she forced herself to look at him.

“Your mother…”

“And Ricardo.”

From the hallway, Carmen’s voice cut in.

“She signed everything willingly.”

Alejandro turned.

His mother stood in the doorway.

Ricardo stood behind her, pale now.

Alejandro lowered the blanket over Elena with a gentleness that made her sob harder.

Then he stood between his wife and the door.

“You touched my wife while I was deployed?”

Carmen lifted her chin.

“This family had to protect itself.”

Alejandro’s face went still.

“This family ends tonight.”
