PART 6
The police did not arrest Carmen that night.
Not immediately.
That made Elena shake harder than the bruises did.
Alejandro saw the fear in her eyes.
He bent down beside the bed.
“They are not staying here.”
Carmen heard him.
“This is my son’s home.”
Alejandro turned.
“No.”
“It is my wife’s home too.”
His voice sharpened.
“And if these documents are fraudulent, you may not have any claim to walk through that door again.”
Ricardo scoffed.
“You think paperwork matters?”
Alejandro looked at him like he had just revealed the family disease.
“That is exactly what you counted on her thinking.”
The officers escorted Carmen and Ricardo out pending further investigation.
Carmen did not look at Elena as she left.
She looked at Alejandro.
“You will regret choosing her over us.”
Alejandro answered quietly.
“I regret not doing it sooner.”
When the door closed, Elena began sobbing so violently the blanket slipped from her hands.
Alejandro did not grab her.
He did not crowd her.
He sat on the floor beside the bed like he had no rank, no uniform, no pride.
Only patience.
“I thought you wanted to leave me,” he said.
Elena covered her face.
“They made me send things.”
“I tried to call.”
“I tried so many times.”
“I thought you stopped fighting for me.”
He closed his eyes.
“I thought you stopped loving me.”
She reached for him then.
Carefully.
Like touch was a language she had forgotten.
He took her hand with both of his.
“I never stopped.”
The hospital confirmed the old injuries the next morning.
Sprained wrist.
Healing rib bruise.
Deep contusions.
Signs of repeated restraint.
The forensic report was clinical.
Merciless.
Useful.
Alejandro read it in the hallway and had to place one hand against the wall.
A nurse asked if he needed to sit.
He shook his head.
He did not need to sit.
He needed to dismantle every structure that allowed his wife to be harmed in his name.
By noon, the attorney filed emergency actions.
